The
Charbonniers
Johann "John" Charbonnier: 1833-1902
John Charbonnier emigrated from
Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, probably in the late 1840s or early
1850s. Certainly, he was living in Missouri, though possibly not
in St. Louis, by the time of the birth of his first daughter in 1859.
John, a barber by trade, enlisted in the 13th Missouri Infantry Regiment on 7
Sep 1861 and was mustered into the Army at Benton Barracks on 5 Nov
1861 as the regiment was forming.
He served with the regiment for the duration of the war, even after it
was redesignated as the 22nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry in 1862. The
wartime service of the 13th Missouri/22nd Ohio includes the capture of
Forts Donaldson and Henry, the battle of Shiloh, the siege of Corinth,
the siege and surrender of Vicksburg, and the capture of Little Rock.
